Compassionate Consumers Members Face Prosecution E-mail
Compassionate Consumers members Melanie Ippolito and Adam Durand will answer to felony charges for documenting conditions and rescuing sick and dying chickens at Wegmans Egg Farm. The state police filed a warrant for their arrest yesterday, and Ippolito and Durand will voluntarily travel to Wolcott, Wayne County to be arraigned at Wolcott Town Court at noon today. The charges include third-degree burglary, which carries a maximum sentence of 7 years in prison.

Compassionate Consumers recently conducted an investigation and released a film entitled "Wegmans Cruelty" that documents egregious cruelty to animals at Wegmans' factory egg farm. Investigators performed an "open rescue" of Wegmans hens, which involves revealing investigator identities and exposing conditions on farms in a professional and honest fashion. Various groups have conducted open rescues throughout the country.

Durand and Ippolito are surprised that the charges were not limited to trespassing, but don’t have any regrets. "These sick and dying chickens were of obviously no value to Wegmans, but of great value to themselves," said Durand. "That's why they're no longer at Wegmans Egg Farm. The many that survived are living out their lives in peace, and who could have regrets about that?"
