United Egg Producers Pays for Misleading Logo E-mail
Animal Care Certified BannedAccording to this article from the Associated Press, the United Egg Producers has agreed to pay $100,000 to settle false advertising claims stemming from their "Animal Care Certified" logo. Wegmans belongs to the United Egg Producers, and used the misleading logo on their cartons until it was discontinued.

From the article:

"A certification program must not be promoted in a way that misleads consumers," said Robert J. Spagnoletti, attorney general for the District of Columbia, which reached the agreement with 16 states and United Egg Producers.

States contended the old logo falsely implied a higher level of care for hens. Spagnoletti released the agreement Thursday.

Wegmans should apologize to their customers for portraying their business as "animal care." This particular logo might be gone, but the cartons still mislead. Last time we checked, Wegmans egg cartons featured this highly inaccurate depiction of their egg farm:
