Over 60 Brave Michigan Blizzard to Attend Film Festival E-mail
Monday, 23 January 2006
Friday, January 20 over 60 people made their way to Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan to attend the screening of "Wegmans Cruelty". The screening was part of the mini film festival "Eating Well?: The Hidden Costs of Factory-Farmed Food".

"Wegmans Cruelty" played alongside "The True Cost of Food", an animated short from The Sierra Club, and "The Video The Egg Industry Doesn't Want You To See" from Ohio-based Mercy for Animals.

Other groups represented at the film festival include Uniting for Justice, Farms Without Harm and Grand Rapids Institute for Information Democracy. Prior to the film festival organizers had received inquiries from students and faculty at the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Kalamazoo College.

"We're happy that 'Wegmans Cruelty' is so well received in regions where people haven't even heard of the grocery chain," said Nicole Matthews of Compassionate Consumers, who presented at the festival. "The film is about an industry gone bad, and people respond to that message."

Meatpackers Denounce Animal Cruelty at Wegmans Egg Farm E-mail
Tuesday, 17 January 2006
ImageSaturday morning, January 14 nine meatpackers from the United Food Commercial Workers union joined a demonstration in Princeton, New Jersey to denounce the cruel treatment of egg-laying hens by Wegmans Food Markets at its company-run farm. The demonstration was coordinated by Community Animal Project (CAP) of Syracuse and Compassionate Consumers as part of the Wegmans Cruelty Tour.

The meatpackers held signs reading "Wegmans: Go Cage-Free" and "Wegmans Hens Deserve Better" while having a friendly contest to see which of them could hand out the most DVDs and leaflets to passing shoppers.

The meatpackers said they had viewed "Wegmans Cruelty" at a conference last month and were disturbed by what they had seen. CAP and Compassionate Consumers hope to work more with the union members in the coming months.

Santa at a Wegmans Demo
Santa showed up at Wegmans Pittsford with 14 other demonstrators

On Sunday, December 18 Santa Claus showed up at Wegmans Pittsford with 14 of his friends to make his opinions heard.

"Little Danny says that 'Every Day You Get Our Best,' but so far Danny hasn't lived up to his promise," said Claus. "Between you and me, he's on my naughty list this year."

What, according to Claus, is the best Christmas present that Danny could give to the 750,000 chickens at his egg farm? "He should make his farm cage-free," said Claus. "He's already planning on revamping the facilities shown in the film Wegmans Cruelty. If he tries out some cage-free sheds, Danny might just find some presents under his tree."

Santa spread the Christmas cheer Sunday, handing out DVDs as gifts to passersby. He told us that he may make a few more visits to Danny's stores before Christmas. Look for him at Rochester-area Wegmans stores in the coming week.

Over 40 Activists Demonstrate at Wegmans Corporate Headquarters E-mail
Saturday, 19 November 2005
Two people hold a huge photograph of the cages at Wegmans Egg Farm

On Friday, November 18 activists from all over New York gathered at Wegmans Corporate Headquarters in Rochester. The activists braved the cold and snow for two hours to send Wegmans a message, loud and clear: We won't go away until your farm goes CAGE-FREE!

Activists came from as far away as Syracuse and Ithaca. They held signs reading "Wegmans Hens Deserve Better" and poster-size photos of the cruel treatment of hens at Wegmans Egg Farm. The signs were clearly visible even in the last hour of the demonstration as the sun set.

Copies of "Wegmans Cruelty" were continually given out to cars stopped at the adjacent traffic light. Reaction from motorists was generally good.

Compassionate Consumers would like to thank everyone who turned out for the event, as well as the Gates Police, who gave valuable consultation beforehand. Community Animal Project of Syracuse also desrves thanks for its efforts.

Friday's demonstration let Wegmans know there are many people who want the company to live up to its reputation as a forward-thinking organization. In months to come we will all keep the pressure on Wegmans.
