Media Coverage on Trial of Egg Farm Investigator E-mail
Friday, 05 May 2006
There has been a rush of media coverage about the trial of Compassionate Consumers investigator Adam Durand. Here are some of the articles.

The May 10 Rochester City Newspaper article.

The May 7 New York Times article. The piece is about the ongoing efforts of Adam Durand, Compassionate Consumers, and animal protection groups nationwide to pressure companies to go cage-free and educate consumers about the cruelties of battery cage egg production.

The Finger Lakes Times articles from May 5. Below the first article about Adam's acquittal is a second about Wegmans allowing reporters to visit the farm and what the reporter saw. The second article claims that Wegmans waved biosecurity measures for the reporters. One has to wonder how strict these measures really are when they can be waved so frivolously.

The May 4 Associated Press article as it appeared on WashingtonPost.com. The AP story has also appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Houston Chronicle, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Guardian Unlimited (United Kingdom), and many other publications worldwide.

The Rochester ABC 13 segment from May 4. The segment includes footage that Wegmans allowed ABC 13 to take inside the egg facility. After the acquittal of Adam on burglary and petit larceny charges, Wegmans, realizing the jury had recognized the egregious cruelty at the company's 700,000 egg facility, decided to wave its supposedly "strict" biosecurity standards in order to get some positive media coverage.

The Finger Lakes Times article from May 4. This article discusses the fact that the judge in this case refused to allow a "justification" defense for Durand.

Egg Farm Investigator Acquitted of Burglary and Larceny Charges E-mail
Friday, 05 May 2006
Today was a great day for the 700,000 hens at Wegmans Egg Farm. Compassionate Consumers investigator Adam Durand was acquitted of all burglary and petit larceny charges. These charges were brought against Durand for rescuing sick and dying hens from Wegmans Egg Farm. The jury recognized that these neglected hens were not mere property, as Wegmans claims, but sentient animals that deserved humane treatment, which they were not receiving from Wegmans. The jurors decided that aiding these hens was not a crime and did not deserve a felony burglary charge.

Adam was convicted of trespassing charges, but he and the other investigators have never denied visiting Wegmans Egg Farm to document conditions there. The jurors saw raw film footage and photographs Adam gathered from the egg facility that documented the inhumane conditions.

In statements to the media Thursday Wegmans said it is glad this matter is over and behind it. Wegmans has to realize that this issue will not leave it alone until the company begins phasing out battery cages at its egg farm.

Today the University of Rochester Vegetarian Education Group (UR-VEG) and Compassionate Consumers delivered over 2,100 petition signatures--each of them concealed inside a plastic egg--to CEO Danny Wegman of Wegmans Food Markets. The signatures are from concerned consumers, urging Wegmans to phase out the use of cruel battery cages at its company-run egg farm in Wolcott.

Danny Wegman has so far ignored the concerns of his customers who have expressed shock and disgust at the inhumane conditions at Wegmans Egg Farm. Today over 2,100 of those customers let Danny know that they expect Wegmans to improve these conditions and go cage-free.

Channel 10, R News, WXXI Radio, and the Democrat and Chronicle all covered the event.

50 People Show Up to Support the CC3 E-mail
Saturday, 11 March 2006
On Friday 50 people came to the vegan buffet and fundraiser at The Root Cellar in Ontario to show their support for the CC3 and the Wegmans Cruelty Campaign. The food, prepared by The Root Cellar staff, was amazing.

Compassionate Consumers owes a debt of gratitude to all the employees at The Root Cellar, who worked for days to prepare for the fundraiser and who made the entire event possible. They really did an amazing job.

Compassionate Consumers wishes to also thank everyone who came to the dinner, as well as Abundance Cooperative Market, which donated a gift certificate for the raffle, and Leena Isac, who donated a basket of her fantastic vegan brownies.

Just down State Route 104 from The Root Cellar 750,000 hens remain crammed in filthy wire cages at Wegmans Egg Farm. All the people who turned out Friday evening showed that this animal cruelty cannot continue.
