Battery Cages (9) Chickens in most advanced egg farms live in what the industry calls "battery
cages." These cages can be stacked, and allow egg farmers to automate
production, fit more birds in a given amount of space, and largely ignore the needs of suffering animals. |
Feces on Birds (3) Wegmans claims that their hens are kept in cages to avoid contact with
manure, but this is simply not the case. We witnessed many chickens
covered in feces, and watced as feces dropped on birds from the cages
above. |
Trapped Hens (7) Many hens get tangled in the wire of their cage or become lodged under
the feeder tray, unable to reach food or water. We rescued many hens
from a death by dehydration; some could not be saved. |
Corpses (12) In such a large facility, it is easy to see how trapped, sick or dead hens can go overlooked. Many corpses are left to rot for indefinite amounts of time, showing obvious disregard for proper disposal and risking the spread of disease. |
Manure Pits (7) Hens that manage to escape from their cages often end up down below, in the manure pits. They must try to survive without fresh food or water, and among massive piles of manure, crawling with insects and littered with corpses and eggs. |
After the Farm (7) We were unable to leave every bird behind at Wegmans Egg Farm. When we found birds who were obviously dying or forgotten, we did not hesitate to bring them home with us.
